Out of all the things people advised me to do this was something i never imagined. This is what i would tell you to do if you have kids. The Maritime National Park is the pier! They will pin your child as a Junior Ranger. Literally swear you in! To become a junior ranger they send you out to discover information about the park. It was unlike anything i would’ve set out to do. I probably would’ve scoffed actually. Now I’m sitting in a corner typing this out while Tru is in the throws of conversation with an actual old captain of a ship out here. Maybe this will change the course of his life. Maybe it won’t. San Francisco is literally filled with historical sites. Today, I’m climbing the steps at Galileo High School on Van Ness Ave and Francisco St. The building was designed by John Reed Jr, a city architect, who also built Balboa and Mission high schools. All three school buildings were built in the style of Spanish Colonial Revival and seem to really bring life to the major parts of the city where they are located. . . . The first students at Galileo gathered and learned in World War 1 Red Cross shacks waiting for their school to be completed. Galileo is also a sports-focused school and notable alumni include famous baseball player Joe DiMaggio and famous football player OJ Simpson. In fact, the school’s football field, which overlooks the Bay, was named OJ Simpson Field until his murder trial, then it was renamed George White Field. . . . Caught in between Russian Hill and Marina District, Galileo has a full view of the Golden Gate Bridge and Hyde Street Pier. Just a few minutes walking and you will find yourself in Fisherman’s Wharf. In 1924, the school expanded with a new wing on Van Ness Ave that doubled its capacity (Galileo Gymnasium, pictured). Galileo Academy was renamed Galileo Academy of Science & Technology and is the only high school in San Francisco (and only 1 of 2 schools in the Bay Area) to have an observatory. Although the observatory is not currently in use, Galileo is currently planning a remodel and re-opening!
